What is Pichwai?
Pichwai — literally “that which hangs from the back” — refers to large, intricately painted cloth hangings traditionally displayed behind the idol of Shrinathji in the temples of Nathdwara, Rajasthan. Born in the 17th century, the art form depicts scenes from the life of Krishna: cows grazing beneath the kadamba tree, lotus ponds, dancing peacocks, and the joyous festival of Annakut.
Each painting is created using natural pigments — stone colours, vegetable dyes, and gold leaf — applied by hand onto cloth in painstaking, meditative detail.
Our Artisans
We work directly with families of Pichwai artists in Nathdwara who have practised this craft for generations, passing brush technique from parent to child. By commissioning work directly from these studios, we ensure fair compensation and the continuation of a living tradition.
Every piece takes anywhere from two to twelve weeks to complete, depending on size and intricacy — and no two paintings are ever quite the same.
